HISTORIC WOMEN!

HISTORIC WOMEN!

Well done to the GMB women in Cordia. 98% in favour of strike
Now we just have to wait for results in education and UNISON results.
Now I like my history but amazingly I can't find a single book on the fight for equal pay. So I might be wrong on this but I believe that this might be only the second strike in UK directly about equal pay since the famous Ford strikes of 1968 (there were actually two strikes that year, not just in Dagenham but also Liverpool) And the first strike was actually also vs Ford Dagenham in 1984 as the women didn’t actually win equal pay in 1968.
Obviously there have been lots of strikes related to annual pay rises which might have referenced fair or equal pay but they’re different. There have also been several strikes related to the implementation of single status including Leeds, Birmingham, Brighton and Liverpool but all of these were on behalf of the men and their pay protections. And there were strikes in Durham and Derby for teaching assistants but again these were over pay cuts based on job evaluation.
But as far I know this is the first strike in Scotland directly related to the fight for equal pay. So you are making History one way or another.
I’d very much welcome any knowledge you might have about other past struggles and I will celebrate them too.
Someone somewhere should write that history.
So CONGRATULATIONS HISTORY MAKERS
